About us

Breathe Easy Baby™, Safety by Design

I was working an as Industrial Designer in the mid 1990’s in the auto industry here in Detroit when I first learned of SIDS, (sudden infant death syndrome). A family member of a friend of mine suffered the incomprehensible loss of a baby that had been attributed to SIDS. I was very concerned to learn of this because it just so happened we were expecting our first baby. During this same time the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) had launched its “Back to Sleep” campaign. SIDS was then and remains a serious threat to the lives of babies the world over.

I decided to investigate SIDS from an Industrial Design perspective and see if there was a way to redesign the crib mattress to address the underlying causes that can lead to SIDS. The internet was becoming more widely available and this allowed me to extensively research the prevailing theories relative to the causes of SIDS. After nearly two years of research I determined that a mattress that allowed the free exchange of fresh air would address what I came to believe were the prevailing underlying causes that can lead to SIDS. Namely C02 rebreathing, airflow restriction accompanied by an elevated body temperature. I created my first “breathable mattress” prototype in time for my second child in 1998. I was convinced this was a safer alternative than conventional non-breathable baby mattresses. Over the next few years, I refined the design and started the first business selling my “breathable baby mattress” design in 2010. The early years were very difficult because I had essentially created a solution to a problem that in large part the public and more importantly baby mattress consumers, weren’t yet aware of. Since then, breathable mattresses have gained more and more recognition by consumers as a safer alternative to conventional non-breathable mattresses. The AAP has recognized this as well and released statements referencing the fact that air- permeable mattresses offer a safer alternative to non-air permeable mattresses for those babies who prefer to sleep on their stomachs. Since the introduction of the AAP’s “Back to Sleep” campaign the SIDS rate was cut in half from 8,000 babies a year to approximately 4,000 in a matter of just a few years. However, since the late 1990’s the SIDS rate has remained relatively constant.

Scientific testing has now confirmed the benefits of a highly breathable mattress and has proven that the exchange of fresh air does in fact provide babies with a safer sleeping environment. This year the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) created a new subcommittee for “Firmness and Breathability for All Juvenile Products” to investigate the need for breathability standards for all sleep related infant products to make babies sleeping environments as safe as possible. The time has finally arrived where the science of safe sleep is now playing a role in the design of all sleep related infant products.

Our story

over a year of researching

Kelly first conceived the idea in the mid-1990s while working in the automotive industry. As he prepared for the arrival of his first child, he became aware of the potential dangers associated with conventional mattresses. He wanted to give his children something safer.
Kelly spent over a year researching infant safety before beginning development of his patented passive airflow design. The earliest designs were so successful, he allowed his own three children to try the new technology.
Over the past 10 years, the Breathe Easy Baby design has expanded to tens of thousands of infants, providing peaceful sleep for babies and peace of mind for parents.

Our Testimonials

We loved this mattress and we have even passed it on to 2 other families who have also loved the mattress. Good luck with the newest branch out and my best to the company. This was worth every penny to us and some. The basics of it being safe are just the surface of problem solving but the ease of cleaning was a life changer for a baby with acid reflux.kept very well even after multiple washes. I would highly recommend this mattress to every new parent and will certainly use it with future children!

I believe the Breathe Easy Baby mattress is a fantastic product. I bought the full size and travel size for my first grandchild with an additional mattress for each size. It is sturdy, easy to assemble, washing the mattress is easy, and they have held up well. I kept the travel size at my home and the full size at my daughter’s home. So, they have both seen quite a bit of use. I now have grandbaby #2 using it.
It gives a new mom and grandma peace of mind! Once the baby could roll over, we felt so much better knowing that the mattress was breathable. Any product that can help minimize Co2 gasses is an amazing safety product. Both my daughter and I are very pleased with the mattress and will recommend and forward information about it to any new moms we know.
    Good luck

Hello! I love the mattress. We used it for our first child and have now handed it down to our second. I love that it’s washable, easy to put on and off. With the breathable design, I have peace of mind. I’m happy that you’ve opened up shop again because I have three pregnant people that I’ve wanted to recommend the mattress to. I’ve forwarded the new website to them now. Thank you!

Hello! My name is Katie and I purchased a mattress almost 2 1/2 years ago for my son. We absolute love it and it definitely gave me peace of mind since my son was a major tummy baby from the time he was born! We are actually about to have our second and will be using that mattress in the baby’s room. Thank you so much for making this product!!

I bought your mattress back in 2011 and used it for both of my children. I LOVED your invention and shared with many people.

This mattress was purchased back in late 2016 and has been such a life saver for my family. My son and daughter are both stomach sleepers since as early as 4-6 months. My husband and I were very thankful and could rest easy at night knowing the kids would be ok on their stomachs. This mattress is built sturdy and very easy to wash. Thanks,

I want to thank you for inventing and selling the Breathe Easy Baby Sleep System. Finding and buying your product was a blessing because it gave me peace of mind whenever I put my son to sleep in his crib. Also thank you for providing a smaller size crib as an option because we wanted our son to sleep in our bedroom when he was a baby, and the small crib fit perfectly without taking up too much space.

I love your product! Both of my babies prefer to sleep on their bellies. I always place them on their back, but they always roll over. The breathable design of this bed really lets me rest assured that my baby is just fine. I’ve used the same frame and topper for two babies now and haven’t had any problems. Thank you for a wonderful, innovative product and for peace of mind through two babies now
