Peaceful sleep for baby. Peace of mind for you. That’s not just our tagline — it’s the standard we hold ourselves to. We’re parents too, and our own babies sleep on Breathe Easy Baby. But we don’t want you to just take our word for it. We want you to ask questions, look at the evidence, and decide for yourself.
Not all “breathable” mattresses are created equal.
The word “breathable” gets used a lot in the baby mattress industry — and that’s part of the problem. Two mattresses can both be marketed as “breathable” and perform completely differently when it comes to airflow resistance and CO₂ rebreathing risk. Until recently, there wasn’t even a consistent way to test for it.
That’s exactly why we don’t want you to rely on the word “breathable” alone. We want you to ask what’s been tested, how the product performs, and whether the claims are backed by evidence. So we had the Breathe Easy Baby™ crib mattress put through more voluntary testing than any other mattress in the baby mattress industry — first to verify the health and safety benefits scientifically, and second to give parents the reassurance they deserve.
Tested by an Independent, World Renown, Credentialed Forensic Engineer
Our testing was conducted by Mike Leshner, P.E. of Leshner and Associates, babybreathinglab.com, a board-certified member and past president of NAFE (the National Academy of Forensic Engineers) and a recognized authority on infant sleep product safety. He evaluated the Breathe Easy Baby™ mattress across five categories:
- Firmness
- Airflow resistance
- CO₂ rebreathing
- Body temperature
- Surface pressure
Test results confirm that Breathe Easy Baby provides babies with a level of safety and comfort that is unmatched in the baby mattress industry: the gold standard for safe sleep.
- CO₂ Rebreathing
CO₂ rebreathing happens when a baby inhales air they’ve already exhaled, allowing carbon dioxide to build up around the nose and mouth. Research has identified this as a contributing risk factor in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths.
In May 2026, Standards Australia approved AS 5407.3:2026 — the world’s first standardized test for CO₂ rebreathing risk in infant sleep products. We’re proud that Breathe Easy Baby crib mattresses comply with this new standard.
In independent CO₂, rebreathing testing, Breathe Easy Baby showed the lowest CO₂ rebreathing rates among all US based breathable crib mattress manufacturers. It outperformed the Newton by a factor of nearly 2:1—landing well below the Australian safety threshold. Additional testing for CO₂ dissipation found that CO₂ dissipates 10 times faster on the Breathe Easy Baby™ mattress compared to a standard firm crib mattress. Testing confirms that Breathe Easy Baby presents a significantly lower hazard level compared to standard firm mattress.

- Airflow Resistance
Airflow resistance is a measurable property — how easily air actually moves through the sleep surface when pressure is applied, like when a baby rolls or presses their face against it. Lower resistance means more fresh air can reach your baby’s nose and mouth in exactly the moments it counts most.
In independent lab testing at 2 liters per minute, the Breathe Easy Baby™ mattress measured 0.19 in H₂O of airflow resistance, compared to 0.897 in H₂O for a standard firm crib mattress — meaningfully lower resistance, so air keeps moving instead of getting blocked, providing babies with a constant exchange of fresh air.

- Body Temperature
Overheating is a well-established risk factor in infant sleep safety. A mattress that traps heat instead of letting it dissipate can raise a baby’s body temperature during sleep — a hazard no matter how “breathable” the top layer feels.
In testing, a baby sleeping on the Breathe Easy Baby™ mattress registered a core body temperature of 101.65°F, compared to 104.63°F on a standard firm mattress—nearly 3°F lower, due to the highly breathable nature of our sleep surface.

- Surface Pressure
Beyond breathability, our sleep surface is designed to gently cradle your baby’s body rather than push back against it. In testing, Breathe Easy Baby measured 5.5 in H₂O of surface pressure, compared to 9.0 in H₂O for a standard firm mattress. Lower surface pressure may help reduce the risk of plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), a condition that affects nearly half of all babies.

- Firmness
Every crib mattress sold in the U.S. is required to meet firmness standards under CPSIA rules. Breathe Easy Baby complies with the Standards Australia Crib Mattress Firmness Standard, AS/NZ 8811.1:2013—the same standard later adopted by the CPSC under 16 CFR Parts 1112, 1130, and 1241, effective August 15, 2022.
Designed for Safety, Comfort and Ease of Use
Every Breathe Easy Baby mattress uses a two-part breathable system:
- A removable, washable sleep surface made from medical-grade polyester spacer fabric
- A durable high quality, supportive base
- Both Sleep Surfaces and Bases are made in Detroit, MI, USA
Together, they’re designed to:
- Provide constant exchange of fresh air in the sleeping environment
- Help prevent CO₂ rebreathing
- Provide extremely low airflow resistance
- Help stabilize baby’s core body temperature
- Help prevent the onset of plagiocephaly
- Maintain a hygienically improved sleeping environment
- No hazardous chemicals or toxic materials
Certifications
- Complies with federal flammability regulations, ASTM 16 CFR Part 1633
- Meets labeling requirements under ASTM F2933-13
- Meets the Standards Australia Crib Mattress Firmness Standard, AS/NZ 8811.1:2013 — adopted by the CPSC under 16 CFR Parts 1112, 1130, and 1241 (effective August 15, 2022)
- Complies with the Australian CO₂ Rebreathing Standard, AS 5407.3:2026
Why Testing Matters More Than Marketing
A mattress can be soft, light, or “airy” to the touch without ever having been tested for CO₂ rebreathing risk or airflow resistance. The only way to definitively evaluate a mattress’ performance in addressing these two conditions is through scientific testing.
That’s why, before choosing a crib mattress, we encourage every parent to ask:
- Has this mattress been tested for CO₂ rebreathing risk?
- What level of airflow resistance does it produce, high or low?
- In the event my baby rolls over, can it breathe normally through the sleep surface?
- Does it promote or prevent the buildup of heat?
- Does it help prevent the possibility of plagiocephaly?
The Takeaway
Testing standards like the new Australian CO2 Rebreathing standard is changing the conversation around infant sleep safety — moving parents from “Is this breathable?” to “Has this been tested, and how did it perform?”
We designed Breathe Easy Baby around the belief that your baby’s sleep environment should be safer, healthier, highly sanitary, and easier to use.
Don’t rely on the word “breathable” alone. Ask what’s been tested. Ask how it performs. Ask whether the claims are backed by evidence.
Your baby deserves to breathe easy, no matter its sleeping position.. Peace of mind for you starts with knowing your baby is sleeping on the safest, healthiest and most comfortable crib mattress available.
