The Foundation of Industrial Design
For those unfamiliar with Industrial Design, let me start by saying that every product you interact with daily has, in some capacity, been shaped by an industrial designer. This unique profession emerged in the early 20th century and merges elements of art, science, engineering, manufacturing, and business. While the names of the profession’s early pioneers may not be widely recognized, the products and brands they helped create certainly are.
My Roots in Automotive Design
A Decade of Experience in Detroit
I began my career in Industrial Design within the auto industry here in Detroit, working on advanced engineering projects. These endeavors involved designing next-generation products using cutting-edge technologies. Over nearly ten years, I cultivated deep expertise across many aspects of design, becoming fluent in the language of innovation.
A Personal Turn Toward Safe Sleep
The Tragedy That Sparked a Mission
Toward the end of my tenure in the auto world, I got married, and my wife and I were expecting our first child. It was during this pivotal time that a close friend confided in me about the unimaginable loss of a relative’s child to SIDS. This occurred during the mid-1990s—a period of growing public awareness around SIDS, largely due to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ “Back to Sleep” campaign.
Researching the Causes of SIDS
Diving into the Science
As both a designer and an expectant father, I felt compelled to act. I began researching SIDS extensively, utilizing the then-emerging internet to access medical literature and clinical studies. My investigation spanned two years and gradually revealed a troubling pattern: SIDS is not typically caused by a single issue but rather a confluence of factors—a perfect storm of vulnerability.
The Concept for a Breathable Crib Mattress
Design Thinking Meets Infant Safety
During this research phase, I hypothesized that CO₂ rebreathing, airflow resistance, and overheating were likely contributing causes. The idea that formed was simple yet revolutionary: an air permeable, breathable crib mattress that maintains a constant exchange of fresh air around a sleeping infant.
The First Prototype
I received my first patent for a breathable crib mattress in the fall of 1997. My second child was the first to sleep on the prototype, and it was the beginning of a mission to improve safe sleep for babies.
Starting the Journey with Breathe Easy Baby
From Concept to Market
I officially launched my first company in 2010 to begin selling breathable crib mattresses to the public. Over time, what began as a deeply personal mission evolved into Breathe Easy Baby—a brand now trusted by parents across the country.
Industry Catch-Up and Regulation
Not All Mattresses Are Created Equal
Nearly three decades later, breathable crib mattresses have become a symbol of safe sleep, yet not all products labeled “breathable” meet the same standard. Many manufacturers use the term as a marketing gimmick, selling slightly modified traditional mattresses under the breathable banner.
The Push for Standards
Regulatory bodies are now evaluating breathability standards for all sleep-related infant products, a move driven by increasing consumer demand and industry misrepresentation.
Science-Backed Safety
Independent Testing Leads the Way
In the fall of 2022, a new firmness standard was introduced to improve crib mattress safety. Most products already comply, but Breathe Easy Baby goes beyond. Our mattress has undergone more scientific scrutiny than any other on the market, earning the designation of “highly breathable.”
Proven to Prevent Suffocation
Our testing confirms that Breathe Easy Baby provides unmatched safety, offering infants the ability to breathe even in face-down positions. No other mattress on the market can claim this level of performance.
Beyond Breathability
Total Safety and Ease of Use
Our breathable crib mattress isn’t just suffocation proof—it’s designed to support every aspect of a baby’s well-being. It’s easy for caregivers to clean, durable, and built with simplicity in mind.
Industrial Design That Matters
Elevating Product Purpose
Industrial Design has historically transformed our everyday lives—from cars to kitchen appliances, and now, to infant sleep. The Breathe Easy Baby crib mattress represents the best of what design can do: protect and nurture life.
Innovation Rooted in Compassion
Creating a safe sleep environment isn’t just a design challenge—it’s a responsibility. And with Breathe Easy Baby, that responsibility is met with heart, science, and unwavering dedication to protecting the most vulnerable among us.
Conclusion: Why It Matters
The breathable crib mattress is more than just another baby product—it’s a vital piece of a safer sleep environment. It’s the result of personal passion, professional expertise, and nearly 30 years of relentless pursuit of safety.
With Breathe Easy Baby, we are not only changing how babies sleep—we are changing how parents feel when they put their baby down to rest. Confident. Reassured. At peace.
Final Thoughts on Breathe Easy Baby
As a parent and a designer, I can say without hesitation: Breathe Easy Baby is the culmination of everything I’ve learned, loved, and fought for. If we can save even one child by promoting safer sleep through better design, then every hour spent has been worth it.
