Kelly’s Blog: Introducing Dr. Somers

Greetings everyone,

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to Dr. Ron Somers. Dr. Somers will be writing blogs periodically for Breathe Easy Baby and we will be publishing his first blog in a couple weeks.

We are very pleased that Dr. Somers has chosen to collaborate with us. We have the utmost regard for him and the work he has done in infant safety particularly as it relates to crib mattresses. Dr. Somers is responsible for the creation of the world’s first and only crib mattress firmness standard. He developed this standard while working for the Australia/New Zealand Department of Health (AS/NZS 8811.1:2013) Currently his standard is in the process of being adopted by the US.

I first became aware of Dr. Somers years ago not long after we first began marketing our breathable mattresses. Upon learning he had developed the firmness standard for AS/NZ, I contacted him to see about testing our breathable mattress. He agreed and I sent him a mattress for testing. A short time later I was notified that our mattress had passed his firmness standard. Subsequently, Dr. Somers became a believer in our breathable mattresses and our passive air flow technology. He spoke favorably enough about us that we started receiving numerous orders from down under!

The importance of Dr. Somers’s work in establishing the world’s first crib mattress firmness standard cannot be overstated. While the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has urged parents for decades to place an infant on their back on a firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet, there has never been an actual firmness standard. Firmness was determined by the mattress manufacturer, making it inevitable there were varying degrees of firmness.

Dr. Somers standard has the potential to save hundreds if not thousands of infant lives around the world every year. Studies prove that an infant sleeping face down on a softer mattress is at a greater risk for suffocation. A firmer mattress reduces, but not fully eliminates, the possibility of infant suffocation.

That’s where our breathable mattress comes in. Our Breathe Easy Baby mattress drastically reduces the possibility of infant suffocation. Not only is it nearly impossible for an infant’s airway to become obstructed while sleeping on our breathable mattress, the Breathe Easy Baby mattress has been scientifically proven to dissipate a babies exhaled CO2 10 times faster than a conventional filled mattress.

Our Breathe Easy Baby sleep system is the answer to providing your baby with the safest sleeping environment possible.
