Of all the potential health hazards confronting babies, there is one that is completely avoidable, suffocation. Yet it claims the lives of thousands of babies every year. While we have been working with regulatory agencies for the past few years for the purpose of establishing breathability guidelines, this is a slow process. Recently a new ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) subcommittee was formed for Firmness and Breathability of Juvenile Products. This subcommittee is now actively engaged in evaluating breathability standards for all infant related sleep products.
However, it could still be several years before breathability regulations are enacted. In the meantime, babies will continue to die from suffocation at the same rate as they have been since the mid 1990’s. Infant deaths by suffocation are completely avoidable and the crib mattress industry knows this. Unless regulations are enacted they will continue to make crib mattresses in the same manner as they always have. The science of safe sleep has now determined their mattresses do not adequately protect babies from suffocation. The pain and suffering inflicted upon the parents and families who have lost a baby who has suffocated in their cribs is incomprehensible, inexcusable and needs to be addressed once and for all. Breathe Easy Baby is now taking it upon ourselves to follow up with the AAP’s (American Academy of Pediatrics) “Back to Sleep” campaign of the mid 1990’s with a new campaign of our own focused on ending infant suffocation. We call it “The Breathe of Life“. We are kicking off this new initiative here in our home state of Michigan. We have petitioned the governor’s office to recognize this initiative and to support our efforts to end infant suffocation once and for all.
